SOMETIMES CUNTS CAUSE CONTROVERSY. THERE WAS A SLIGHT MISUNDERSTANDING WITH CUNTRY LIVING ISSUE TWO.

Dear JCR,

We are writing to apologise for the inclusion in this term’s issue of Cuntry Living of an uncaptioned photograph of the Exeter College rugby team alongside Chris Johnson’s article, ‘True Lad?’ (p. 32). This image was printed without the consent of either the team or the photographer. It was taken out of its original context as a contribution to a charity calendar, and placed alongside an article discussing the potentially misogynistic and offensive culture associated with truelad.com and with ‘lad’ masculinity.

The image was included in the compilation of the magazine by a team of volunteers from a number of colleges. The fact that it was printed was an oversight on behalf of the editorial team, and was not intended as a comment on Exeter College, the JCR, or the rugby team. It is not the intention of Cuntry Living to associate Exeter College, the JCR, or the rugby team – either directly or by association – with misogyny or with the negative connotations of ‘lad’ culture. The author of the article was not involved in selecting the materials used to illustrate his article, and it was not his intention to associate his article with any comment on Exeter College, the JCR, or the rugby team.

Cuntry Living has an open submissions policy, and the views and opinions expressed in each article are those of the author alone. It is not produced for profit and is created only by the efforts of a team of volunteers, from a number of colleges. That this obviously inappropriate image was included was a clear failure on the part of the editorial team to control the published content of the zine. In next term’s issue – and in all future published material – Cuntry Living will ensure that its editorial policy and production structure is such that no similar mistakes will or can be made. The intention of the zine is not to cause unnecessary offence, or to promote a dogmatic political position, but to provide an open forum for discussion of gender, sexuality and feminism.

We would therefore like to apologise to all those pictured in the image for any offence or upset caused by its publication, and to the JCR in general for any negative associations that this may be seen to attach to the reputation of the college or any of its members. We are especially sorry that this image was printed in an issue of the zine for which Exeter JCR generously voted to provide funding. We are, as we have always been, extremely grateful to the JCR for its continued support and interest in the Cuntry Living project, and to the many members of the college who have contributed to the production of the zine since its foundation last year, and hope that this unfortunate situation won’t damage the close relationship between the college and the zine any more than it already has. As well as being sent to the JCR, this letter will be published on the Cuntry Living Facebook group and blog, and an apology will be carried in the next issue of the zine. When the present issue is scanned and published online as a pdf, the image in question will be removed.
